Wall-Mounted Billboards for Building Facades

Wall-mounted billboards turn a blank facade into a large advertising face. We fabricate the frame, fix it to the wall, print the skin and flight it.

A wall-mounted billboard is fixed directly to the side or front of a building, so the wall becomes the support and the building does the work a pole would otherwise do. It suits blank gable walls, boundary walls and facades that face traffic or pedestrian routes.

Two approaches are common. One is a steel frame bolted to the wall and covered with a stretched skin. The other is a skin fixed straight onto the wall surface, which is closer to a building wrap. We help you choose between them once we have seen the wall.

Typical specifications

  • Face sizesfitted to the wall, for example 12 m x 3 m, 6 m x 3 m or larger faces on tall gables
  • Framesteel, painted or galvanised, stand-off design with drainage behind the skin
  • Fixingschemical or mechanical anchors chosen after testing the wall material
  • Skin optionsPVC/flex or mesh, tensioned in the frame or fixed directly to the wall
  • Lightingfront-lit arms or back-lit boxes, mains or solar, where permitted
  • Accessrope access or crane for installation and skin changes
  • Wind and loadassessed per wall, with engineering sign-off as required

Which walls make good billboard sites

The best walls are plain, largely windowless and square-on to the approach. Sightlines matter as much as size, so we check what a driver or pedestrian actually sees from a distance before recommending a face. Good candidates include:

  • Gable end walls facing a main road or junction
  • Blank facades on industrial and warehouse buildings
  • Boundary and retaining walls beside busy routes
  • Showroom and retail walls that face parking or a forecourt
  • Tall walls on corner buildings where two approaches meet

Reading the wall before we fix to it

Face brick, plastered brick, concrete, block and sheeted steel all take fixings differently. We test the substrate, look for damp, cracks and loose plaster, and choose anchors to suit. A wall that sounds solid can be hollow or weak at the surface, which is why fixing is decided on site and not from a photograph.

Wind pulls on a wall billboard as it does on any large face. Frames are sized and spaced to spread that load, and mesh skins are an option where airflow matters. Engineering design and sign-off are arranged as the structure and site require.

Frame systems and skins

A framed wall billboard stands off the wall slightly, keeping the skin flat and allowing water to drain behind it. Frames are fabricated in steel with a protective finish and fixed through the wall into suitable anchors.

Skins are printed on PVC or mesh, then installed and changed by our flighting crews. For printed graphics fixed directly across a facade, see our building wraps, and for printing detail see billboard skin printing.

Access, approvals and consent

Walls are often too high or too awkward for a ladder. Rope access and mobile crane solutions let us reach the face safely, following the applicable health and safety requirements.

The building owner must consent in writing. Outdoor advertising also needs municipal approval, with a roads authority such as SANRAL or a provincial roads department involved where the wall faces one of their roads. We assist with applications and supporting documents, but approval rests with the authority.

Lighting and upkeep

Wall billboards can be lit from the front, and some frames suit back-lighting. Where mains power is far from the wall, solar lighting is possible. Operating hours and brightness may be limited by the approving authority.

We inspect fixings, check the skin for tears and slack, and repair problems early, so the wall and the sign both stay in order.

What to send us for a quote

Send the address, clear photographs of the wall from the road and from close up, and an approximate height and width. Mention whether the wall is plastered, face brick, concrete or sheeted, and whether anything such as windows, pipes or a roof edge interrupts it.

We arrange a site visit and wall test after enquiry, then recommend a framed face or a direct fix. The building owner's details speed up consent, which is needed before any fixings go in.

If the wall has been painted or damaged recently, mention it. Previous repairs can hide weak patches, and knowing the history helps us choose where to test and where to fix.

At a glance

Wall-mounted billboards put a large advertising face on the side or front of a building, using the wall as the support. Billboards Africa fabricates the frame, fixes it to the wall, prints the skin and flights it, so a blank gable, boundary wall or showroom facade becomes a working wall-mounted billboard. Our wall-mounted billboards suit retail, industrial and commercial buildings alike. We serve building owners, advertisers and billboard operators in Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Midrand, Roodepoort and the wider Gauteng region, as well as other provinces and neighbouring countries by arrangement.

Every wall billboard begins with a check of the wall material, condition and wind exposure, followed by a steel frame and fixings designed for that surface. Skins in PVC or mesh are printed and flighted by our crews, with rope access or crane lifting where the wall is high. We assist with municipal and roads authority applications and landowner consent, although approval rests with the authority. If you have a wall facing a busy road or junction, use the quote form to send photographs and the wall dimensions. We can also advise on wall-mounted billboards that sit on tall gables in Ekurhuleni.

Common questions

What is the difference between a wall-mounted billboard and a building wrap?

A wall-mounted billboard is usually a frame fixed to the wall with a tensioned skin. A building wrap covers a facade with printed material across much of the surface. We can advise which suits your wall and budget.

Can any wall carry a billboard?

No. We test the substrate and check for damp, cracking and loose plaster. Some walls need a different fixing method or a self-supporting frame instead.

Do wall-mounted billboards need approval?

Yes. The municipality must approve outdoor advertising, and a roads authority may be involved near its roads. Landowner consent is also required. Approval rests with the authority.

How is the skin changed?

Our flighting crews remove the old skin and fit the new one using rope access, a crane or a platform, depending on the wall.

Can the billboard be lit at night?

Yes, front-lit or back-lit, and solar where mains power is not practical. The approving authority may limit brightness and operating hours.

Will fixing damage the wall?

Anchors do leave holes. We plan fixing positions carefully, seal them properly and discuss restoration with the owner when a sign comes down.
