Street Pole Advertising for Urban Routes

Street pole advertising places small, repeated faces along streets and walkways. We print, fit and change pole faces and help you secure the right positions.

Street pole advertising uses lamp posts, traffic poles and dedicated advertising poles along urban streets. Faces are fitted at head height or above, usually in portrait format, and the same message repeats down a corridor so it builds familiarity with every block passed.

Unlike a single large billboard, a pole campaign works by repetition. It suits brands that want street-level presence in a node, along a retail strip or on the approach to an event, and it is often used alongside bigger formats for reinforcement.

Typical specifications

  • Facesportrait format sized to the pole and bracket, single or double sided
  • Poleslamp posts, traffic poles or dedicated advertising poles, subject to owner consent
  • MaterialsPVC/flex, mesh or rigid panels, printed to bracket sizes
  • Fixingsbrackets and banner arms chosen for the pole's load capacity
  • Windmaterials and sizes selected for exposure, with damaged faces replaced
  • Installationcrews and traffic arrangements planned per route
  • Campaign layoutnumber and spacing of poles set per corridor and confirmed at enquiry

Formats and faces

Pole faces are portrait-shaped and sized to the pole and bracket, so each message is short and bold. They can be single-sided or double-sided, facing traffic or pedestrians, and fitted with brackets, banner arms or framed panels. Typical positions include:

  • Lamp posts along business and retail strips
  • Poles at junctions and traffic approaches
  • Dedicated advertising poles on private land
  • Event routes, campus roads and precinct streets
  • Pedestrian walkways and public squares

Who owns the pole

Poles belong to someone, and the owner decides what goes on them. Municipal and utility poles are controlled by the municipality or the utility, while poles on private estates, campuses or business parks belong to the landowner or managing body. Availability on municipal poles is limited and conditions are strict, so approval comes before everything else.

Where no suitable pole exists, we can fabricate and erect dedicated advertising poles. See vertical unipole billboards for larger portrait structures.

Printing, fitting and changing faces

Faces are printed on PVC or mesh, or on rigid panels for poles that carry framed units. Our skin printing is sized to each bracket, and our flighting crews fit and change faces along the route.

Working beside live traffic needs planning. Crews use appropriate vehicles, signage and safe working arrangements that follow the applicable health and safety requirements, and work on busy roads is scheduled with the road owner's conditions in mind.

Approvals and conditions

Street advertising needs approval from the relevant authority, usually the local municipality, with a roads authority involved on its roads. Conditions often cover pole loading, height above the pavement, sightlines at intersections and the removal of old faces.

We assist with applications and supporting documents. Approval rests with the authority, and we do not promise an outcome. Available positions, quantities and flighting periods are confirmed at enquiry.

Wind, wear and upkeep

A banner on a pole catches wind, and faces on exposed streets can tear, twist or loosen. We choose brackets, face sizes and materials to suit the pole and the exposure, and inspect and replace damaged faces so the corridor looks consistent. See our rentals page for how we offer space on available sites.

What to send us for a quote

Describe the street, strip or precinct you want to cover, the number of faces you have in mind and the dates of the campaign. If you know who owns the poles, tell us. For private estates and business parks, send the managing body's details.

We will confirm which positions are available, what the owner and authority allow and how faces will be fitted and changed, all on your quotation.

A route map or a list of street names is the quickest way to start. We use it to count poles, check spacing and sightlines, and group positions into stages so faces can be fitted and changed in a sensible order along the corridor.

At a glance

Street pole advertising puts repeated portrait faces on lamp posts and dedicated poles along streets, retail strips, junctions and pedestrian routes. Billboards Africa prints, fits, changes and maintains street pole advertising for brands, agencies, retailers and event organisers in Johannesburg, Sandton, Rosebank, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and other South African cities, with work across Southern Africa by arrangement. Repeating one message down a corridor builds familiarity with every block, and street pole advertising works well alongside larger billboards for reinforcement.

Poles belong to a municipality, a utility or a private landowner, so owner consent and municipal approval come first. We assist with applications and supporting documents, although approval rests with the authority, and where no suitable pole exists we can fabricate and erect dedicated advertising poles on private land. Faces are printed on PVC, mesh or rigid panels sized to each bracket, and our crews fit and change them with safe working arrangements beside live traffic. Available positions, quantities and flighting periods are confirmed at enquiry. Use the quote form to describe your corridor.

Common questions

No. Lamp posts belong to the municipality, a utility or a private landowner, and the owner's approval is required. We assist with applications, but approval rests with the authority.

What size are street pole faces?

Faces are portrait-shaped and sized to the pole, bracket and local conditions. Sizes are confirmed on your quotation.

How long do pole campaigns run?

Flighting periods depend on availability and the approving authority's conditions, and are confirmed at enquiry.

Can you supply dedicated poles on private land?

Yes. We fabricate and erect advertising poles for landowners, estates, campuses and business parks, subject to approvals.
