Highway Billboards Designed for High-Speed Reading

Freeway and national road billboards must be tall, clear and simple. We build, flight and maintain highway billboards, and help you work through the roads authority process.

A highway billboard is defined by where it stands: beside a freeway or national road, where traffic moves fast and the driver has seconds to read it. Everything about the structure and the creative is shaped by that moment.

The structure is usually a tall unipole or similar support with a large face, raised clear of barriers, signs and vegetation. The creative is short and bold. We build the structure, print and flight the face and look after the site, and we plan with the roads authority from the start.

Typical specifications

  • Structuretall unipole, double-sided or V-shape, depending on traffic approach
  • Heightset to clear barriers, signs and vegetation, subject to approval
  • Face formatsfor example 12 m x 3 m or 18 m x 6 m, subject to site and authority
  • Foundationreinforced concrete designed for freeway-height wind loads
  • Face materialPVC/flex or mesh; LED only where the authority permits
  • Lightingfrontlit or backlit, with solar options where needed
  • Accessarranged with a traffic and safety plan for erection and servicing

How highway sites differ

Speed sets the rules. At freeway speeds, a driver sees a face only briefly, so the structure needs height and size to be noticed early and the message must be readable at a glance. Sight lines are measured by the distance at which the face first becomes visible and how long it stays in view.

The verge itself is also different. A freeway reserve has fences, drainage, signs and often services such as cables, and the authority controls what may be built within its boundary. Many highway billboards stand just outside the reserve on private land, with the landowner's consent.

Sun glare, night lighting and background clutter also matter. A face that looks excellent in daylight can disappear against a bright sky or a busy industrial skyline, and a face that faces west can be washed out in the late afternoon. We check orientation and background during the site assessment, and recommend colours, lighting and materials accordingly.

Typical structures and sizes

Most highway billboards are unipoles, sometimes double-sided or V-shape where traffic arrives from two directions. Larger formats include super billboards, and in some cases gantry billboards cross the road.

Common faces include 12 m x 3 m and 18 m x 6 m, for example, but the size actually allowed depends on the site and the authority. Height, face area and distance from the roadway are all set at approval.

Approvals near freeways and national roads

Highway billboards are among the most regulated formats. The local municipality assesses the application, and the roads authority, SANRAL on national roads or a provincial department on provincial roads, applies additional rules about distraction, distance from the carriageway and visibility of road signs. The landowner must also consent.

We assist with applications and supporting documents, and we prepare site plans and photographs, but approval rests with the authority and we never promise an outcome. Digital faces near highways are particularly restricted in brightness, hours and content.

Building, flighting and servicing safely

Work beside a freeway needs a traffic plan, safe access to the site and equipment that can reach the structure. Our teams plan erection and later skin changes with the applicable health and safety requirements in mind, including rope access and mobile crane solutions where they are needed.

After the structure goes up, flighting changes the skin to match your campaign, and inspections check the steel, bolts, frame and lighting. Whether you own the site or want space on an available one, we confirm the scope on your quotation.

Creative that reads at speed

A highway creative must work in seconds. Use a single idea, large type, strong colour contrast and a logo that is easy to spot. Avoid small print, phone numbers, long web addresses and cluttered backgrounds, none of which can be read from a moving vehicle.

Our design service can adapt campaign artwork for freeway reading, and we proof it at the actual face size before printing. Legibility also depends on skin material, lighting at night and the angle of the sun at the site, all of which we consider when recommending a face.

At a glance

Highway billboards stand beside freeways and national roads, where traffic moves quickly and a message must be seen and read in seconds. Billboards Africa manufactures, erects, flights and maintains highway billboards for advertisers, media owners and landowners across South Africa, with teams that travel through all provinces and into Southern and wider Africa. A highway billboard is typically a tall unipole, double-sided or V-shape structure with a large face such as 12 m x 3 m or 18 m x 6 m, raised clear of barriers and road signs along corridors such as those around Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town and Bloemfontein.

Highway billboards are among the most regulated formats. We assist with municipal and roads authority applications, prepare site plans and supporting documents, and explain early where a digital face may be restricted, although approval rests with the authority. Our teams plan erection, skin changes and inspections with traffic and safety requirements in mind, and every highway billboard we build is supported by flighting and maintenance. If you want a highway billboard on your property, or space on an available site, send us your details.

Common questions

How close to the freeway can a billboard stand?

The distance is set by the roads authority and the municipality for each site. We confirm it during the site assessment.

Can I put a digital billboard beside a highway?

Possibly, but authorities often restrict brightness, operating hours and content. We raise these early.

What makes a good highway creative?

A short message, large type and strong contrast. See our artwork requirements guide.

Can I buy space instead of building?

We offer billboard space on available sites. Locations, sizes and flighting periods are confirmed at enquiry.

Do you work on highways outside Gauteng?

Yes. Our teams travel, or we use approved local partners, confirmed at quotation.

Ready to go bigger?

Tell us where and what you want to advertise, and we will plan the billboard, the approvals and the flighting.
