Monopole Billboards for Compact Urban and Commercial Sites

A slim single-support structure that fits where a larger billboard would not. We build, flight and maintain monopole billboards across South Africa and Africa.

A monopole billboard raises its face on a single slim steel support. It is the structure many site owners picture first when they think of a billboard on a petrol station forecourt, a shopping-centre frontage or a corner plot on a business road.

The appeal is practical. A monopole takes up very little ground, can often be placed where a wider structure would obstruct parking or access, and presents a clean profile in built-up areas where appearance matters to the municipality. We fabricate and erect monopoles, and we can advise whether a monopole or a heavier unipole is the better fit for your site.

Typical specifications

  • Supportsingle steel tube, straight or tapered, fabricated to the site
  • Foundationreinforced concrete designed to the soil and wind exposure
  • Face formatsfor example 6 m x 3 m or 12 m x 3 m, or portrait, subject to approval
  • Mounting heightset by the site, kerb line and local rules
  • Face materialPVC/flex or backlit material; LED where permitted
  • Lightingfrontlit or backlit, with solar options where grid supply is limited
  • Servicingladder or platform arranged for flighting and inspections

What makes a monopole different

In common use, the term monopole describes a single-support billboard with a more modest face and a slimmer column than a freeway unipole. The support may be a tapered or straight steel tube, with the frame mounted at the top and a face sized to the site rather than to a high-speed road.

That lighter profile is not a shortcut on engineering. The structure still resists wind, carries the weight of the skin and frame and transfers every load to a foundation designed for the soil at that exact location.

Typical sites and buyers

Monopoles are a good match for suburban main roads, business parks, retail strips and industrial zones such as the areas around Midrand, Kempton Park, Germiston and Roodepoort. Property owners often choose them to generate a rental income from a corner of the stand, while advertisers use them to build local awareness near a branch, showroom or event venue.

Where the road is a fast freeway and the message must read from far back, a larger highway billboard is usually the better answer. Where the site is a slow suburban street, a monopole may be all the structure you need. See also roadside billboards.

Foundation, access and servicing

Because the column is slim, the foundation does much of the work. We arrange the excavation, reinforcement and concrete as part of our foundations and civil works, working around services such as water, sewer and electrical lines that may cross a small commercial site.

Access matters too. A ladder or platform is arranged so that skins can be changed and the frame inspected safely, and lighting cables are routed to suit the face. Where a site has no dependable grid supply, solar-powered billboards can be considered.

Approvals and next steps

A monopole still needs approval before it goes up. The municipality assesses it under its outdoor advertising rules, a roads authority may be involved if the site is near a provincial or national road, and the landowner must consent. We assist with the application and supporting documents, but approval rests with the authority.

Send us the address, the size of the stand and a few photographs through the quote form. We will confirm what we can build, what the site needs and how the cost is structured on your quotation.

Planning your monopole project

A monopole project usually moves in a fixed order: site survey, approval application, engineering, fabrication, civil work, erection, lighting and first flighting. Fabrication can happen in parallel with the application stage, but we do not erect anything until the approvals are in place and the landowner has agreed in writing.

If you are a property owner rather than an advertiser, tell us whether you plan to sell the face yourself or want help finding advertisers. We can talk through billboard rentals and how space on available sites is offered, but we make no promises about occupancy or income.

At a glance

Monopole billboards place an advertising face on a single slim steel support, making them a practical choice for forecourts, retail frontages, business parks and suburban main roads. Billboards Africa designs, fabricates, erects and maintains monopole billboards for site owners and advertisers throughout Gauteng, the rest of South Africa and neighbouring countries. Because a monopole billboard needs very little ground space, it works where a wider structure would block parking or access, in areas such as Midrand, Randburg, Germiston, Centurion and Boksburg.

Our monopole service covers the steel column and frame, the reinforced concrete foundation, lighting, the printed skin and ongoing flighting. We also help with municipal outdoor advertising applications and, where a provincial or national road is nearby, the roads authority process, although approval always rests with the authority. If your site is better suited to a larger structure we will say so, and recommend a unipole, double-sided or roadside format instead. Send us your site details and we will confirm what the stand can take.

Common questions

Is a monopole cheaper than a unipole?

A lighter structure usually involves less steel and a smaller foundation, but pricing is confirmed on your quotation because it depends on the face, height, soil and approvals.

Can a monopole be double-sided?

Yes. A second face can be mounted back to back on the same support, provided the structure and foundation are designed for it.

Will my landlord or body corporate need to agree?

Landowner consent is required for any billboard. If the site belongs to a body corporate or a landlord, that consent forms part of the application.

Can I put an LED screen on a monopole?

It is possible on a suitably designed structure with a power supply, but brightness, hours and content may be restricted by the authority.

Do you maintain monopoles you did not build?

We can inspect and quote for repairs and maintenance on existing structures, after assessing their condition.
