A billboard is an outdoor machine of steel, fixings, lighting and printed material, and it lives in conditions that wear every part of it. Sun fades colour, wind loosens fixings and tears skins, rain and humidity corrode steel, and some sites suffer vandalism or theft of cabling and lamps.
Billboards Africa carries out repairs and planned maintenance on billboard structures, faces, lighting and screens. We service structures we have built and, after a site survey, structures built by others.
Common billboard repairs
The most visible repair is the torn or sagging skin, usually caused by wind or loose fixings. Replacing the skin is only half the fix; we also look for the cause, such as a bent frame, worn eyelets or an incorrect tension system, so the new skin does not fail the same way.
Frames can bend or crack after impact or fatigue, catwalks and ladders can corrode, and lighting can fail through water ingress, loose wiring or damage. Each fault is quoted from what we find on site.
Speed matters after storm or impact damage. A bent frame or a half-detached skin can become a hazard to people and vehicles below, so tell us when a structure looks unsafe and we will make it safe before we discuss the longer-term repair.
- Torn, faded or sagging skins and loose edges
- Bent or damaged face frames
- Corroded steelwork, fixings and walkways
- Failed lamps, LED strips, wiring and controls
- Damage after storms, vehicle impact or vandalism
- Digital screen faults, module replacement and cleaning
Planned maintenance
Reactive repairs cost more in the long run than regular upkeep. A maintenance plan schedules visits to check fixings, clean faces, test lighting, treat early corrosion and touch up paintwork, so small problems are fixed before they become structural or visible to the public.
The frequency depends on the structure, the environment and the type of face. A coastal or industrial site with salt or pollution will need more attention than a sheltered suburban one, and illuminated or digital faces need more checking than a plain front-lit skin. Planned work is confirmed on your quotation.
Records matter as well. After each visit we note what was checked, what was done and what should be watched, so the next visit starts from a known position and owners can plan work ahead of time.
Steel, paint and protection
Steel is the backbone of a billboard, and protecting it is the best way to extend its life. We repair damaged coatings, treat rust and repaint structures where needed. Welding repairs and strengthening are carried out as the structure requires, and engineering design and sign-off are arranged where a change affects the loading.
See billboard steel fabrication for the way our new structures are built and finished, and billboard faces and frames for face repair and replacement.
Lighting and digital faces
Illuminated faces rely on lamps or LED lighting, power supplies and controls, and failures here are often noticed first because the sign goes dark at night. Faults can be traced to wiring, power supply or moisture, and we repair or replace the failed components, including solar systems where fitted.
Digital screens need their own care: cleaning, ventilation checks, module replacement and software updates. Our LED screen maintenance service covers this in more detail.
Getting a repair or maintenance quotation
Send photographs of the damage, the site address and what you know about the structure. We will arrange a site visit or survey after enquiry, because the cause of a fault is often not visible in a photograph. Where the problem looks serious, we recommend an inspection first.
We carry out repairs and maintenance across Gauteng and all South African provinces, and in Southern and wider Africa. Outside Gauteng and outside South Africa, work is done by our teams travelling or through approved local partners, confirmed at quotation. Access may involve rope access or mobile cranes depending on the site.
At a glance
Billboard repairs and maintenance from Billboards Africa keep structures, faces, lighting and screens in working order. We replace torn, faded and sagging skins, straighten or replace damaged frames, treat corrosion and repaint steelwork, repair failed lamps, LED strips and wiring, and service digital screens. We also repair damage after storms, vehicle impact and vandalism, and look for the cause of each fault so it does not repeat.
Our billboard maintenance plans schedule regular visits to check fixings, clean faces, test lighting and treat early rust, with frequency set by the structure and its environment, from sheltered suburbs in Johannesburg and Pretoria to coastal sites in Durban and Cape Town. We service structures we have built and, after a site survey, structures built by others, using rope access or cranes where the site requires. Repair and maintenance scope is confirmed on your quotation, and engineering sign-off is arranged where a repair affects the loading. Send photographs and the site address through the quote form. Repairs after storms are treated as a priority when a structure could be unsafe.
Common questions
Can you repair a billboard you did not build?
Yes, after a site survey to assess the structure, access and condition.
What causes billboard skins to tear?
Wind load, loose or worn fixings, a bent frame or an unsuitable material for the site. We identify the cause before reskinning.
Do you offer regular maintenance plans?
Yes. Visit frequency and scope are agreed per structure and confirmed on your quotation.
Can you repair storm damage?
Yes. We assess the damage, make the structure safe, and quote repairs or replacement as needed.
Do you maintain digital billboards?
Yes. Digital maintenance covers cleaning, module replacement, power and data checks and content system support.
Do I need approval for repairs?
Like-for-like repairs generally do not change the sign, but changes to size, structure or lighting may need approval. We advise at quotation.
