Rope Access for Hard-to-Reach Billboards and Facades

Technicians reach tall structures, building facades and awkward sites on ropes, for flighting, inspection, repair and wrap installation without full scaffolding.

Rope access is a method of working at height in which trained technicians descend or ascend on ropes, using backup systems, to reach the work. For billboards and signs it opens up positions where scaffolding is impractical, lifts cannot reach, or the cost and disruption of other access methods are out of proportion to the job.

Billboards Africa uses rope access for billboard flighting, inspections, repairs and building wrap installation, and for other sign work on tall or restricted sites. Rope access and lifting work follows the applicable health and safety requirements.

Where rope access makes sense

Rope access suits sites where the face is high, the surrounding ground is awkward, or the building does not allow scaffolding. Examples include signs on tall building facades, billboards on rooftops with limited access, structures on steep ground, and faces over roads where closing lanes would be disruptive.

It is also practical for short jobs. Replacing a torn skin, tightening fixings or photographing damage can take less time on ropes than setting up other access equipment, as long as the structure offers safe anchor points.

Because ropes spread the work over a small team and little equipment, they also reduce the footprint at the base of the structure, which helps on busy pavements, in parking areas and next to live traffic.

Services we carry out on rope

Flighting is the most common use: removing and installing skins on tall or hard-to-reach faces. We also carry out visual inspections, documenting corrosion, loose fixings, damaged frames and lighting faults with photographs, so owners have a clear record. Minor repairs such as re-fixing edges, replacing eyelets and securing loose panels can often be done during the same visit.

Rope access also supports building wraps, where large printed panels are installed on facades, and it complements mobile crane solutions on jobs that need both heavy lifting and fine finishing.

Planning and safety

Rope work begins with a site assessment. We identify anchor points, check that the structure or building can safely support them, plan how the work area will be controlled below, and assess weather. Wind, rain and lightning can stop work at height, and we will not proceed in unsafe conditions.

Anchor points on older structures need particular care, and in some cases we recommend an inspection or repair before work starts. Where a rope solution is not appropriate, we say so and propose another method.

Communication is part of planning. Everyone on the job knows the sequence, the signals and the stop conditions, and the work is paused whenever conditions or equipment change.

Rope access compared with other methods

Scaffolding gives a stable platform for long jobs with heavy materials, but it takes time to erect and can be costly on tall facades. Lifts and cherry pickers are fast and comfortable where ground access allows. Cranes handle heavy components. Rope access sits between them: light on equipment, quick to deploy, and able to reach where the others cannot.

We choose the method that suits the site and the work rather than defaulting to one. On some jobs, a combination is best, such as a crane for a structure section and rope technicians for fitting and finishing. See billboard installation for how methods are combined.

Booking rope access

Send us the address or location, photographs of the structure or facade, the work you need done and your preferred dates. We arrange a site visit where needed and confirm the method, scope and timing on your quotation.

We offer rope access in Gauteng and across South African provinces, and in Southern and wider Africa. Outside Gauteng and outside South Africa, work is done by our teams travelling or through approved local partners, confirmed at quotation.

At a glance

Rope access from Billboards Africa lets technicians reach billboards, rooftop signs and building facades on ropes, without the time and disruption of full scaffolding. We use rope access for billboard flighting, skin changes, visual inspections with photographic records, minor repairs and the installation and removal of building wraps, on tall structures, steep sites and positions above busy roads where other access methods are impractical.

Every rope access job starts with a site assessment covering anchor points, the condition of the structure, weather and control of the area below, and our work follows the applicable health and safety requirements. Where a different method suits the site better, such as a lift, scaffolding or crane, we say so. We offer rope access in Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban and across South Africa, and travel or use approved local partners elsewhere in Africa. Send us photographs, the address and the work required through the quote form and we will confirm the method on your quotation. Where ropes are not the right tool, we propose scaffolding, a lift platform or a crane instead and explain why.

Common questions

Is rope access safe?

It is a recognised method of working at height when carried out with proper planning, equipment and backup systems. Our work follows the applicable health and safety requirements.

Can you install a billboard skin using rope access?

Yes, on faces where scaffolding or lifts are impractical. We assess anchor points and conditions first.

Can rope access be used on a building wrap?

Yes. It is commonly used to install and remove wraps on tall facades.

What stops rope work?

Strong wind, heavy rain, lightning or unsafe anchor points. We will tell you if work has to be postponed.

Do you need scaffolding as well?

Not always. Some jobs are done entirely on ropes, others combine ropes with lifts or cranes. We recommend a method after seeing the site.

Can you do rope access outside Gauteng?

Yes, using our travelling teams or approved local partners, confirmed at quotation.
