Billboards Africa is based at Rivonia Central in Sandton and works across Gauteng, in all nine South African provinces and into Southern and wider Africa. This page sets out where we work, how the work is organised in each area and what changes when a site lies outside Gauteng or outside South Africa.
Every area has its own roads, municipality, weather and approval route. A unipole beside the N1 at Midrand is a different project from a wall-mounted site above a Soweto commuter route or a rooftop in Pretoria's Hatfield. We assess each location on its own conditions, and the area pages linked below explain what we look at first.
Gauteng: where our teams are closest
Our office is in Sandton, so the three Gauteng metros are where we can survey, build, flight and maintain with the least travel. Each metro runs its own outdoor advertising approval process: the City of Johannesburg, the City of Tshwane and the City of Ekurhuleni. A site that looks similar on both sides of a municipal boundary can follow a different application route, so we confirm the correct authority before design starts.
The Gauteng freeway network shapes much of the work. The N1, N3, N12 and N14 and the R21 connect the metros, and sites alongside them are usually large-format structures that also need the roads authority's view. Inside the towns, mall frontages, arterial roads and commercial nodes suit smaller roadside, wall and rooftop formats. Our Gauteng area pages are:
- Billboards Johannesburg - CBD, the M1 and the bypasses
- Billboards Sandton - premium business-district sites
- Billboards Pretoria - Tshwane, Menlyn, Hatfield and the N4
- Billboards Midrand - the N1 corridor between the metros
- Billboards Centurion - N1, N14 and R55 sites
- Billboards Randburg - Republic Road and Malibongwe Drive
- Billboards Roodepoort - the West Rand edge
- Billboards Soweto - commuter routes and community nodes
- Billboards Ekurhuleni - the East Rand metro
- Billboards Kempton Park - the airport precinct and R21
- Billboards Boksburg - N12, N17 and industrial belts
- Billboards Benoni - N12, R51 and the lakes area
- Billboards Germiston - the N3 and N12 interchange
Other South African provinces
We take billboard work in KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, the North West and the Northern Cape. Outside Gauteng, the work is done by our own teams travelling to site or through approved local partners, and which of the two applies is confirmed at quotation.
Conditions change a good deal between regions. Coastal sites in Durban, Cape Town, Gqeberha and East London face strong wind and salt air that affect steel, coatings and fixings. Inland mining and industrial centres such as Rustenburg and Emalahleni have different access and landowner arrangements. Each city has its own page: Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Cape Town, Gqeberha, East London, Bloemfontein, Polokwane, Mbombela, Rustenburg, Mahikeng, Kimberley, Emalahleni.
We do not keep a permanent team in every city, so travel, accommodation and logistics are factored into the quotation, and where a local partner is more practical we say so up front.
Southern and wider Africa
Billboards Africa also quotes projects in Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi and further afield.
Cross-border work depends on the project. Transport of steel, screens and printed skins, import duties and local permits are confirmed per project, and the approving authority in each country decides what is allowed on a given site. We say at quotation whether our own teams will travel or whether an approved local partner will carry out the installation.
What we do in every area
The service range is the same wherever the site is, although the access method and the logistics change. For a new site we can arrange the design, foundations, steel structure and billboard face, then print and flight the skin. For existing sites we handle repairs, inspections, relocations, dismantling and upgrades such as static to digital.
Where height, traffic or a building facade makes ordinary access impractical, we use rope access or mobile crane solutions, following the applicable health and safety requirements.
- Billboard manufacturing and steel fabrication
- Billboard installation
- Billboard flighting and skin printing
- Billboard rentals
- Digital LED billboards and screens
- Repairs, maintenance and inspections
Approvals differ by area
Outdoor advertising needs approval from the relevant authority. That is normally the local municipality, plus a roads authority such as SANRAL or a provincial roads department where the site is near a national or provincial road, and the landowner's consent. We assist with the applications and the supporting documents, but approval rests with the authority and we cannot promise an outcome.
Digital billboards add a further layer, because brightness, operating hours and content may be restricted by the approving authority. Our approvals guide explains the process in more detail.
How long approval takes depends on the authority and the site, and we do not give fixed lead times.
How to start
Send us your site details, or the area you want to advertise in, using the quote form or by calling us. A site visit or survey is arranged after your enquiry, and our office at Oriental City Rivonia is open to visitors by appointment only.
Tell us the area, the format you have in mind or the audience you want to reach, and whether the site is new or existing. If you already have a structure, tell us its condition and whether it carries lighting. If you have no site, say so and we will confirm what rental space is available. Artwork can follow once the site and size are agreed, and our design service can prepare it.
At a glance
Billboards Africa serves clients who need billboard services in South Africa, from Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria, Midrand and Centurion to the East Rand towns of Kempton Park, Boksburg, Benoni and Germiston. Our teams manufacture steel structures, erect unipole and double-sided billboards, print and flight skins, supply digital LED screens and maintain existing sites. The areas we serve extend beyond Gauteng to Durban, Cape Town, Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, Polokwane and every other province, and across Southern Africa including Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Mozambique.
Outside Gauteng, projects are delivered by our own teams travelling or through approved local partners, confirmed at quotation. Each area has its own approval route, so we help with municipal, roads authority and landowner applications while leaving the final decision with the authority. If you are searching for billboard services in South Africa that cover building, flighting, rentals and upkeep under one roof, send us your site details or use the quote form and we will confirm what your location needs. Inclusions, sites and flighting periods are confirmed on your quotation.
Common questions
Which areas do you cover?
We cover Gauteng, every South African province and Southern and wider Africa. Outside Gauteng, work is done by our teams travelling or through approved local partners, confirmed at quotation.
Do you work outside South Africa?
Yes. For cross-border projects, transport, import duties and local permits are confirmed per project, and the local authority decides what may be built or displayed.
Is the approval process the same in every area?
No. The municipality, roads authority and landowner involved differ from site to site, so we confirm the right route for your location before design starts.
Can you visit my site before quoting?
Site visits and surveys are arranged after your enquiry. Send your site details or use the quote form and we will confirm the next step.
Can I visit your office?
Our office is in Rivonia Central, Sandton, and visits are by appointment only.
